The torch-keeper’s lament

Your feelings can’t be guaranteed.

They will phase out in action and after correcting

dissipate until we are once again friends.

You remind me of the standards

that also crumbled under gravity.

If you seek freedom from convention,

resist the whim to destroy it.

You will find freedom in all the spaces outside and around,

even within on the same detested construct

lives the opportunity to convert it to suit you in time,

and once it does the next generation will see it as stifling.

We once craved play and sweets and learned to like winning,

and what that means,

thrilled by taboo which eventually became common enough to ignore

in favor of rest and factual information,

expected outcomes and now disgusted by the chase,

flaunting the unnecessary and the past that never happened.
